Ready, Set, Bake!

The third week of the Great British Bake Off was bread week. Time to see who would would rise to the challenge.

Here’s our resident GBBO reviewer, Ian, with his take on this week’s action from the tent. Warning: contains spoilers.

Welcome back for episode 3 of the Great British Bake Off.

“We are now down to ten bakers and they all ‘knead’ to be at their best as they know that Paul Hollywood is on the look out for those soggy bottoms!

“We started off with a signature challenge to make two soda breads: one sweet and one savoury. This was a strong round with plenty of flavours and well cooked breads. Marc E decided to have a bath in buttermilk during the round as well, but each to their own.

“This week, Hermine received a ‘Hollywood handshake’ for her soda breads, including one that had a salmon mixture inside. On the other end of the spectrum, Rowan made a bread that Paul described as ‘eating a lemon drizzle cake in a sandstorm’…ouch!

“To brighten things up, the technical was to make rainbow bagels. These colourful breads were a great sight and the bakers were getting in all sorts of twists and turns with the doughs and the boiling, with some rather large rings. However, when served up, these ‘party rings’ all seemed to taste great, and at the end of the rainbow, Linda was the winner. Unfortunately, Rowan was left at the other end in last place.

“Then, we moved to the final round and the bread showstopper, this week it had to be a large bread plaque. Rowan had it all to ‘prove’ and his bread tree was very real looking and almost life-size. Elsewhere, Dave and Lottie made bread houses (not the ginger kind though). Sura made a fantastic tomato vine with feta filled balls and Marc E created a very personal experience inspired Buddhism bread wheel.

“In the the end it was great to see Marc E win ‘Star Baker’ after a very consistent ‘rise’ in performance this week, while Rowan was asked to leave the tent after one too many disappointing bakes. Rowan was a character and did add charm to the tent, but it was his time to go.

“Next time it’s chocolate week.

“See you all then!”
