The resurgence of the campervan is just one of many peculiar phenomena that lockdown has left in its wake. Others include ‘having conversations with the people we live with’ and ‘exercise’.
But perhaps there’s something in this campervan business.
Imagine a holiday where you can take everything you want with no fear of reproach from an officious check-in attendant. A holiday where you can get a proper cuppa and drive on the correct side of the road. A holiday where you can sleep in a 48-square foot van that comes with its own chemical toilet mere centimetres from where you’re sleeping… OK, maybe not the last one.
So, pack that trestle table that hasn’t been used since the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and join us as we hit the road with our top three campervan day trips.
St Ives to Sennen
Start the day in Tate St Ives before heading to the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Once you’ve got your cultural fix, take the coastal road via Treen and stop off at the Geevor Tin Mine for a fascinating glimpse into the history of Cornish mining. Head south before finishing on the beautiful beach at Sennen Cove. Bliss.
Tynemouth to Bamburgh
A drive along the Northumberland Coast is sure to blow the cobwebs away. Starting in Tynemouth, head north before stopping at Craster. This small town is the home of the kipper, so pick up a couple of these smoked beauties for your next breakfast. Continue to Bamburgh for a walk along the beach. If you’re feeling adventurous, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne is a little further north – just don’t get caught out by the tide!
Murlough Bay to Giant’s Causeway
A campervan is a great way to explore the rugged scenery of Northern Ireland. A short journey from the beautiful Murlough Bay on the north coast is Rathlin Island – a stunning outcrop where puffins nest from April to July. Back on the mainland, be sure to stop in Ballintoy where Game of Thrones fans might recognise the Iron Islands. Head on to the legendary Giant’s Causeway for an afternoon of (careful) hopping around.
